Understanding EV Charger Types
When shopping for an EV charger, you’ll notice two main connector types in North America: NACS (North American Charging Standard) and J1772. Both deliver reliable charging, but which one you choose depends on your vehicle and charging needs.
NACS (North American Charging Standard)
Originally developed by Tesla, NACS is quickly becoming the standard across North America. Many manufacturers, including Ford, GM, and Rivian, are adopting NACS for new models. If your car comes with a NACS port, you can plug directly into Tesla chargers and most new Level 2 home chargers without an adapter.
J1772
This has been the traditional standard for non-Tesla EVs for years. Nearly every non-Tesla electric vehicle on the road today uses J1772 for Level 2 charging. Many chargers still ship with a J1772 plug, and Tesla drivers can use a J1772-to-Tesla adapter if needed.
Adapters
Adapters are widely available (for example, a NACS to J1772 adapter) to keep things flexible, so even if you buy a J1772 charger today, you can future-proof your setup.
