What is a Level 2 EV charger?
A Level 2 EV charger is a 240 volt charging station on its own circuit. It uses the same class of circuit as an electric range or a clothes dryer. Three things set the actual charge rate. The first is the amperage your car can accept. The second is the rating of the charger. The third is the spare capacity in your panel. A charger rated for 48 amps needs a 60 amp circuit, plus room in the panel to carry it.
GO EV Colorado runs a load calculation on every visit and sizes the circuit to what your home can carry. We do not sell you the biggest unit and hope the panel keeps up.
Colorado weather matters here too. Cold slows the chemistry inside an EV battery. Lithium packs warm themselves first before they take a fast charge. A Level 2 circuit gives the car the power to warm the pack and still charge on time. That is why many Front Range drivers give up on Level 1 in their first winter.

An EV charger install in Colorado is a permitted electrical project, not an appliance swap. Every city along the Front Range asks for a permit and a final inspection on a new 240 volt circuit, and a licensed electrician must do the work. Permit rules change from city to city. Denver, Aurora, Lakewood, Boulder, and Colorado Springs each run their own building department, each with its own portal and its own inspection window. GO EV Colorado works in all of them. That is why our customers never touch the paperwork.

Most EV charger pages in Colorado are still advertising a federal credit that has ended. That is not a small detail when you are budgeting a project, so here is the real status.

How long does EV charger installation take?Most home jobs finish in one visit of a few hours. Long conduit runs, outdoor mounts, and detached garages add time. A job with a service upgrade usually runs most of a day. Permit review times vary by city. We file the permit as soon as you approve the quote, then book the install around that review. |
Do I need a panel upgrade for a Level 2 charger?Not always. Many Colorado homes have a 200 amp service with room to spare. Older homes on a 100 amp service are often close to full. Adding a forty to sixty amp circuit to a small panel breaks code and creates a fire risk. We run a load calculation at the assessment. We call for an upgrade only when the numbers demand one, never as a default upsell. |
Does GO EV Colorado install Tesla Wall Connectors?Yes. We install the Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connector and the Universal Wall Connector. Both work with Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, and Cybertruck. We can set up load sharing if you charge two cars on one circuit. We also install J1772 and NACS units from other brands, so the charger still fits your next car. |
