What size breaker do I need for a Level 2 charger?The NEC requires a twenty five percent buffer between the charger amperage and the breaker, because EV charging is a continuous load. A 32 amp charger needs a 40 amp breaker, a 40 amp charger needs 50 amps, and a 48 amp charger needs a 60 amp breaker. Do I need a panel upgrade before installing an EV charger?Not always. Most homes built after 1990 with a 200 amp panel have room. Older homes on a 100 amp service, or panels already near capacity, may need an upgrade first. Adding a forty to sixty amp circuit to an undersized panel breaks code and creates a fire risk. We run a load calculation during the free assessment and will never call for an upgrade that is not genuinely required. |
Can I install an EV charger outdoors or in a detached garage?Yes to both. Outdoor installations use weatherproof rated hardware, so Colorado winters are not a problem with the right equipment.
